Logical reasoning is one of the greatest strengths of artificial intelligence. Given enough information, AI can analyse symptoms, correlate signals, and produce explanations that are coherent, structured, and internally consistent. In many technical scenarios, those answers will even be convincing.

But convincing is not the same as correct.

In real-world systems, logic alone rarely tells the full story. And this is not a theoretical argument. It is something that plays out regularly in live environments, under pressure, with real consequences. Here is a real-world example.

When problems look logical, but are not

Many failures present with familiar symptoms. A slow network connection, for example, can point to drivers, kernels, offload behaviour, power management, routing, or userspace interference. Viewed in isolation, each of these explanations is reasonable. Each has precedent. Each has documentation to support it.

An AI system will explore those paths methodically and arrive at conclusions that feel logical and defensible. That is exactly what it is designed to do.

What it cannot see is actual context.

Real environments are not clean abstractions. They are shaped by cost decisions, temporary fixes, inherited hardware, time pressure, and compromises that made sense at the time but were never revisited. Networks and systems evolve, and "Just for now" quietly becomes permanent.

AI sees the system state, however, experience remembers how it got there.

That difference matters far more than most people realise.

The point where AI stops helping

In this case, every indicator suggested a software issue.

  • Different operating systems behaved differently.
  • Kernel versions appeared relevant.
  • The network interface negotiated correctly, yet throughput collapsed.
  • Logs were clean.
  • Counters showed nothing obviously wrong.

From a purely logical standpoint, reinstalling the operating system might have been a reasonable next step. Many engineers would have done exactly that, especially under time pressure. It would have felt decisive. It would have produced a visible action.

But experience introduces a different instinct.

After enough time in the trenches, you learn that when symptoms are extreme, inconsistent, and resist easy explanation, the cause is often physical, external, or embarrassingly simple. Not always obvious, but simple. And usually sitting just outside the frame of what the tooling is focused on.

That instinct does not come from textbooks or models. It comes from repetition. From outages that did not behave as expected. From problems that survived every sensible fix until someone stepped back and questioned the obvious.

The question experience asks that tools do not

Instead of asking "what is the most logical explanation left?", experience asks a different question:

What physical component am I trusting without questioning?

That question reframes the entire problem.

In this case, it led to removing a cheap unmanaged, unbranded PoE switch from the physical path. This specific device had been doing its job quietly for years and reported itself as gigabit. The same device that powered a phone for years,  and had never raised suspicion before. The end result?

  • No reinstall.
  • No rollback.
  • No tuning.

The problem disappeared instantly.

Not gradually or partially. Completely.

Why AI could not make that call

AI did not fail here. It worked exactly as intended.

It reasoned from the information it was given. It produced a coherent narrative. It suggested steps that were internally consistent and defensible based on the observed data.

What it could not do was distrust the environment itself.

AI does not remember the number of times low-cost hardware behaved perfectly until it did not. It does not carry the weight of probability built from seeing the same class of failure repeat over years. It does not feel the quiet discomfort when a system behaves "almost" correctly.

Experience is not just knowledge, but judgement shaped by consequences - and that is something no purely logical process can fully replicate.

This is not an argument against AI

Structured reasoning has real-world value. AI accelerates analysis, reduces blind alleys, and enforces discipline. Used well, it saves time and sharpens thinking.

But tools do not make decisions. People do.

The most costly failures occur when organisations mistake:

  • Coherent explanations for correct ones

  • Suggestions for judgement

  • Analysis for accountability

Complex systems tend to fail at the boundaries where logic alone stops being sufficient. That is where human judgement earns its keep.

Final thoughts

AI will continue to improve, and I actively encourage its use. But when systems matter, experience is what prevents unnecessary disruption.

In this case, the fix was not clever or technical. It was judgement informed by time spent in the trenches. That judgement avoided a pointless reinstall exercise, only to see the same problem manifest again afterwards.
