Founder’s Story

The journey behind Phenomlab Ltd

How it started

Hi, I’m Mark Cutting, and this is the story behind my career and the work that led to founding Phenomlab Ltd.

Every story begins somewhere, and mine began at age 10 with a BASIC interpreter and a machine that would look prehistoric today. That early curiosity about how technology works – and how it fails – shaped the story of my entire career.

What started as experimentation soon became a lifelong commitment to understanding systems, improving them, and building technology people can rely on.

Finding my direction

As my career progressed, I moved from hands-on engineering to leading IT and cybersecurity strategy at scale. I worked inside organisations where reliability and security were non-negotiable. Those experiences form a central part of my story: technology is only valuable when it works under pressure, not just when it looks good on a diagram.

I built systems that quietly supported thousands of users. I delivered programmes where failure was not an option. Each role became another chapter in the story that shaped my approach: practical, clear, resilient, and focused on outcomes that matter.

Why I founded Phenomlab

After many years in senior roles, I noticed a story repeating itself across startups and growing firms. They needed credible cybersecurity and technology leadership, but access to it was limited. When they could access it, they were met with inflated costs, complex proposals, or advice that didn’t match what the business actually needed.

That gap became the turning point in my story.

Phenomlab was created to offer something different:

  • Senior leadership without the overhead

  • Clear, practical guidance shaped by experience

  • Security and infrastructure that support the business

  • A partner who owns outcomes rather than handing over documents

This wasn’t just a business decision. It was the next logical chapter in a story defined by solving real problems with clarity and accountability.

What drives my approach

Every career has a story behind the mindset. These are the principles that guide mine.

Curiosity and constant learning

Technology changes fast. A strong story demands continuous learning.

Designing for humans

Systems succeed when people understand and trust them.

Simplicity over complexity

A recurring theme in my story: simple, intentional design outperforms complex frameworks every time.

Accountability

If I recommend something, I stand behind it. Ownership is part of the story.

Real-world delivery

Anything I design or advise must hold up under real pressure. That’s always been part of the story.

The principles I work by

These principles have appeared throughout my story, shaping how I think and how I deliver.

KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid

Clarity reduces risk. Complexity creates it.

The 7 Ps: Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents P* Poor Performance**

Every resilient system has these principles in its story.

Security should enable, not restrict

This belief has been consistent across my entire story.

People first

Technology only matters when it helps the people who rely on it.

A career built on delivery

I’ve led infrastructure and security programmes across financial services, manufacturing, open-source communities, and large enterprises. I’ve delivered solutions that improved resilience, supported compliance, and protected organisations during critical events.

If I had to summarise my story in one line, it would be this:

I build systems that don’t fail, even when nobody notices they’re working.

That theme has carried through every chapter.

Where the story led

Founding Phenomlab wasn’t a change of direction. It was the continuation of a story built on decades of practical experience. Today I help organisations strengthen their security posture, modernise their infrastructure, prepare for audits, and build technical foundations that support long-term growth.

The story is still being written, shaped by every client, every challenge, and every opportunity to build systems that withstand real-world pressure.
